How I Tame My Curly Mane

As you have seen in some posts and videos before, I have really curly hair. It's become manageable as it has gotten longer and I've gotten older, so I thought I'd do a little run down of what I use to style it.

You can kind of see this in the pictures, but my curls are not all the same size. The back and underneath are super curly, major corkscrew action happening there. The front and parts of the top layer and even random bits in the back are slightly looser curls, although still quite tight. I always struggle with flatness near my roots and major volume at the ends, leaving me with a triangle head (not flattering). As it gets longer, the weight of my hair pulls it down so that is less of an issue, but some of the stuff I use helps with that. My hair tends to be quite dry and frizzy, a common issue with curly hair, so I focus a lot on moisturizing and curl defining products.

In the shower, I wash my hair every other day or so with the L'oreal Sulfate Free EverCurl shampoo and conditioner, and on the days I don't wash it, I use the cleansing conditioner from the same line. I really love the shampoo and conditioner, they give just the right amount of moisture and smell delightful. The cleansing conditioner is pretty good too, but I also like the Naked one from Herbal Essences. Once a week I do a deeper cleanse and condition, and for that I use the Garnier Pure Clean shampoo and the L'oreal Total Repair Damage Erasing Balm. These are both really great products, with the shampoo leaving my scalp squeaky clean and the conditioner replenishing all the moisture I need.

When I style my hair, I always start with a detangler. I'm using one from It's a 10 right now, which I talked about in my detangler post. I spray that on, then follow with a curl defining cream. I like the Moroccan Oil one, but I think the Kinky Moves product from Not Your Mother's might be better (and cheaper!). I work that in with my hands, follow that with some Moroccan Oil on the ends, then brush it through with a Tangle Teezer. I know you're not really supposed to brush your hair when it's wet, but I can't just brush it when it's dry and style when it's wet, it becomes way too frizzy and tangled. Once I brush it, I then scrunch it up with the Deva Curl Ultra Defining Gel, which is great. I will be trying more from this line when I finish my other products. Then I spray a bit of Not Your Mother's Beach Babe salt spray in the roots if I feel like it, which gives my hair a bit more texture. Now, that's what I do when I shower in the morning and my hair will be down for the day. I always let it air dry, and if I don't shower in the morning I just put it up or in a braid. When I shower at night, I use the detangler and Lush's R & B hair moisturizer, which is a really nice product and may one day replace spray detanglers for me. I always braid my hair somehow when I sleep and usually secure it with a scrunchie or one of those ribbon hair ties, since those are more gentle.

Whew! That was long, but curly hair does require a fair amount of maintenance. I love it though.

Any curly haired gals out there with some tips for me?
